Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your role within Kytun?

My name is Sean Mc Cafferty and I work in the Fabrication & Welding Division within Kytun.

Daily we manufacture various products from aluminium for all our various product categories which include Roofing Accessory Range, Aluminium Rainwater System and Architectural Aluminium. My role involves working with the large bending machinery and fabricating products.

What inspired you to pursue a career within the construction industry?

I have been involved in the construction industry since I left school. Over the years I have worked on various roles and more specifically roofing in the past.  The construction industry has also been in my blood I suppose which I really enjoy the diverse aspects.

Could you share some of the key responsibilities or tasks that you manage in your current position?

My main key responsibilities are fabricating and manufacturing various products. My role is to work with the various bending and cutting machinery to ensure the products are made to the required specification.

What aspect of your work do you find most fulfilling or rewarding?

I really enjoy when a customer has a specific or bespoke requirement. From receiving the drawing to actually making the product give’s you that sense of pride. It is also satisfying seeing the product installed by the customer.

From your perspective, what skills or qualities are crucial for success in your position?

I think anyone that has an interest in construction and has some persistence can work in fabrication. You need to be willing to make a few mistakes and learn from them to be successful in this role. It always helps to have an interest in fabrication or enjoy working with your hands.

Can you highlight any notable achievements or milestones from your career that you’re particularly proud of?

When I first started the role over 5 years ago I didn’t think it would be possible to work the larger machines in the factory. But with onsite training from the fabrication team at Kytun my confidence grew and through time I was able to fabricate and use the larger machinery.

If someone were interested in pursuing a career similar to yours, what advice would you offer them?

My advice would be to get into a trade and learning more about construction products that would give you a good start, or also utilise the up skill program’s now available to apprentices.

Outside of work, what interests or hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?

My main interest outside of work is cars and rallying. I have a major passion for rebuilding old cars spending most of my evenings and weekends under the bonnet.

Looking ahead, how do you see your role evolving, and what are your long-term goals?

I think my role has already evolved since first starting with the company over the last 5 years. My long-term goals would be to continue to grow in my current role and progress my skills within the Kytun Fabrication & Welding Division.
