Introduction

Saintfield Church is a heritage-listed building in Northern Ireland built in 1798. Over the years, the church’s roof began experiencing severe issues due to significant damage and rot in the roof battens. Saintfield’s location subjects it to extreme weather conditions, particularly driving rain and high winds, leading to slates being blown off due to the weather conditions.

Upon thorough investigation by the experienced team at Penrose Roofing, it was determined that the primary source of the water ingress was at the verges.

To address these challenges, Penrose Roofing selected the Kytun Performance Plus Slate Dry Verge Trim (T1). This product was ideal for eliminating water ingress, withstanding high winds, and providing a sleek finish to the verge.

  1. Water Ingress Prevention: The Kytun Slate Dry Verge Trim effectively sealed the verges, preventing water from penetrating the roof. Its design ensures that water from the verge slates is directed directly into the eaves gutter, enhancing overall weather protection and preventing further damage to the roof structure.
  2. Wind Resistance: Tested to endure wind pressures up to 10 times the highest expected uplift, the Kytun Slate Dry Verge Trim provided robust protection against the high winds typical of the Saintfield area. This feature ensured that slates remained securely in place, reducing the risk of future damage.
  3. Cost and Availability: By using the Kytun Slate Dry Verge Trim as an alternative to slate-and-a-half, Penrose Roofing overcame the challenges of slate availability and rising costs. This solution resulted in significant savings for the customer, both in terms of material costs and the ease of installation.
  4. Durability and Aesthetics: The Kytun Performance Plus Aluminium Slate Dry Verge offered a long-lasting, maintenance-free solution. Its sleek appearance complemented the historic aesthetic of Saintfield Church while providing modern protection.

Through the implementation of the Kytun Performance Plus Slate Dry Verge Trim, Penrose Roofing successfully addressed the longstanding issues faced by Saintfield Church’s roof, ensuring its preservation and durability for years to come.
