A Q&A session with our current Kytun apprentice, Mark Gallagher.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your placement with Kytun.

Hi, I’m Mark Gallagher and I joined the Kytun team in 2023 as a placement student in Quantity Surveying. As part of my course at ATU Letterkenny, my placement with Kytun will be for 18 months, with a view to full-time employment with the company.

What attracted you Kytun as the chosen company for your apprenticeship?

Kytun was very appealing to me for a number of reasons. Firstly, I was drawn to the opportunity of learning new skills as part of a rapidly growing business, which is local to me but operates on a national scale. Also, as Kytun work with a wide variety of clients on both commercial and residential projects across Ireland and the UK, I was confident that I would gain a broad level of experience across sectors.

What skills have you gained during your time with Kytun?

During my time with Kytun so far, I have learned various different skills involved in quantifying, Measuring and estimating. It has been really beneficial to put the knowledge I have gained within my studies into practice within real world context and apply this in my daily work.

Describe the culture of the company/what it is like to work at Kytun.

I have enjoyed my time with Kytun and this has a lot to do with the culture of the company and the positive work environment I am part of every day. I would describe the company culture as committed to always going the extra mile, with a determination for continuous improvement. This is an important factor for me  and is a key factor in why I am aiming to continue my career in Quantity surveying with Kytun.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing an apprenticeship in your field?

For those thinking of undertaking an apprenticeship or placement in any field, I would say to go for it. This is a great opportunity to improve upon your existing skills. My advice would be to listen to any advice or help provided, as this will be invaluable in your future career. I feel that applying your knowledge in a practical way will enhance your skills and employability for when you complete your course.

Would you recommend Kytun to other students and if so, why?

I would highly recommend Kytun to others. As a company, they support your learning and spend time giving you the opportunity learn new skills within a growing and successful workplace.

And finally, what’s next for you after this internship?

When my internship with Kytun is complete, my plan is to finish my final year of college in ATU Letterkenny and qualify as a Quantity Surveyor. From there, I plan to take on a  full-time role with Kytun, beginning the summer of 2024.
